Poison Oak Treatment
Many factors that are associated with the allergy will allow the doctor to indicate which specific treatment will be required to control the reaction, these are:
- The patient's age, medical history and overall health.
- Which is the severity level of the injury.
- If there is allergy or intolerance to certain procedures, medications or therapies.
The best preventive treatment is to avoid contact with poison oak or with the urishiol oil. The family must be very well documented and informed about the general aspect and the appearance of poison oak and other types of poison ivy that can cause this type of allergies.
In any case, if a person comes into contact with the plant or the oil, then this person should wash oil residue left on the skin immediately.
We recommend washing with soap the area that has been covered by the oil before six hours have elapsed from the moment of contact. You must repeat this process three times. Towels can also be used with alcohol to remove more effectively the oils from the skin surface.
Also should be washed all clothing and items that could have had direct contact with the plant as waste oil can remain in these objects.
In case of blisters on the face or sensitive areas of the skin, the physician should review the injury in order to specify a steroid cream or appropriate treatment for injuries.
